About a couple weeks back I came across a video of drone band sunn O))) in concert and to say the least, it was quite shocking. Whether or not drone is something that sounds good, just imagining how these guys have created a literal wall of feedback seems insane. Their live performances essentially consist of them playing in front of a large wall stacked up with huge SUNN amps which make it all the more easier to retain a single chord for minutes on end only on feedback and distortion. For those interested, heres part 1 of the concert I came across earlier: [link]
Its youtube but surprisingly good quality, and btw its suppose to sound like that for those unfamiliar with the genre. I can't say I'm a huge fan of sunn O))) personally, though I admire them and have a few of their releases, I just find the whole concepts of their lives almost ridiculous and completely exaggerated. I really am curious how it would feel to be surrounded by so much noise but at the same time it scares me how anyone could get out of one of their concerts without any serious damage to their hearing. Anyways, because of this I somehow wanted to recreate what their live performances looked like as a wallpaper design.
I had some ideas floating around of what I wanted to do with it but nothing 100% concrete. I knew most importantly though, that I wanted to recreate their wall of feedback and try to vector out each amp cleanly as possible.
The wall was vectored from 5 different concert photos I found and a couple larger reference photos of SUNN O))) amps. The amp wall sort of gets mirrored because I simply got lazy and didnt feel like it would be worth the effort to do both sides individually. The band members were mainly taken from the cover to "Black One" and pasted on top. The hanging guitar is also from another concert photo I found which I wanted to incorporate in somehow.
All in all, the amps didnt come out as cleanly or smoothly as I would have liked. The screen patterns got really messed up and I can't do perspective for shit. The final outcome here as well isnt exactly what I had originally planned, that being something along the lines of a larger recreation of a stage/concert minus the design elements. I actually planned for it to be colorless as well, but that didn't happen either. Anyways I may take these elements as rework them into something else, who knows. For now, we have this which I hope is sufficient. Comes in two colors and res, DOOM purple and DROONE bluuueee..... Blue being the original and the purple being a secondary color tweak I did.
